Gear Review: Sitka Vapor SD Rain Jacket
The Sitka Vapor SD is an ultralight rain jacket that checks all the boxes. It also promises to be more waterproof, breathable, and durable. I’m naturally skeptical of such bold claims (especially when any rain jacket claims to be breathable), but I was impressed overall and found the Vapor SD to be an upgrade across the board compared to what I’m used to.

Gear Review: Senchi Merlin Hoodie Ultralight Fleece
Stripped down and full of fishnet-like holes, the Merlin is as close to nothing as a fleece can get, almost. It promises supreme versatility and function, while also being hip in that hard-to-get kind of way. Could this thing change my view of the humble fleece? That’s what I hoped to find out.

Gear Review: Houdini Come Along Wind Jacket
The Come Along Jacket is a unique addition to the wind jacket market with some interesting features in a purposefully feature-bare clothing category. There is plenty to keep a gear nerd interested. What I confirmed is that wind jackets rule, and that I will carry the Come Along on my next thru-hike. Read on to find out why.

Gear Review: Sierra Designs Tepona Wind Jacket
The Tepona Wind Jacket aims to bridge that gap between T-shirt and rain jacket. Marketed as the “first line of defense against nature’s windy offense,” and for less than four ounces. I had no doubt that it would become one of my most used layers, but would the boost in breathability over a rain jacket justify the extra ounces? Many miles ahead to find out.

Gear Review: Backcountry Tahoe Sun Hoodie
The Tahoe Sun Hoodie thrives in warm weather pursuits when sun protection is a priority. This functional active layer helps me keep it casual while protecting my skin during fun in the sun. Being tan is overrated.

Gear Review: Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily Hoodie
The Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily Hoodie is the latest version of sun hoodie to lie crumpled and sweaty on my floor. Spoiler alert, it is also one of the best. This shirt might seem simple, but it has an important role to fulfill. Let’s take a look at why it will be with me when I take those first, sweet steps of my next adventure.

Gear Review: Patagonia Strider Pro Wind Pants
Patagonia’s Strider Pro Pants are not wind pants per se, but they fit the function while providing more features. Pulled from the company’s trail running collection, they are built to log long miles while maintaining minimal weight. Sound familiar? Let’s see what they have that my hiking wind pants don’t.
